Some people know him as Mikey Walsh from the 鈥80s classic听The Goonies, Samwise Gamgee from the听Lord of the Rings听trilogy, Bob Newby from Netflix鈥檚听Stranger Things,听or the inspiring walk-on in听Rudy.听But we know him as a fellow Eagle. Award-winning actor and mental health advocate Sean Astin, SPA 鈥24, will deliver the address at the 17吃瓜在线 School of Education鈥檚 148th commencement, December 15, in Bender Arena. About 1,475 members of the Class of 2024 eligible to collect their diplomas across two ceremonies.
Peyton Upchurch (she/her/hers) is a December 2024 graduate of the online Master of Education in Education Policy and Leadership program. Currently, she serves as the Assistant Director of Alumni Communications at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where she channels her passion for human connection and community-building into fostering meaningful experiences for alumni and听students alike. Outside of her professional life, Peyton enjoys traveling, spending time with her dog Maisie, and exploring the outdoors in her Western North Carolina hometown and beyond. Following graduation, Peyton is excited to put the skills she has built at 17吃瓜在线 to work in the world of education policy.听

The School of Education's Dr. Brian L. McGowan and Dr. Corbin M. Campbell have co-led a transformative examining how to scale equity-based teaching in higher education. The two-year study, funded by a $1.1 million grant, brought together distinguished educators from 17吃瓜在线, the University of Connecticut, and Florida International University to develop comprehensive strategies for creating more equitable learning environments.
